Chaparral 2018-2019: 27.2 Adjunct Junction

Adjunct Junction

by Brian Reff
2nd Vice President, Glendale College Guild

Welcome to the October Issue of Chaparral.

This month’s theme is “Harvest.” So, when I think of the harvest season, I think of the Fall, I think of Indian Summer, I think of Halloween, and lastly, I think of Thanksgiving. With that being said, I remember an old adage that dates back to days when the majority of people in the world were involved in agriculture, “You reap what you sow!” This means you must plant something to harvest something. This also means that you must make an investment to get a return on it. Additionally, not all crops are successful; some are failures.

What this really means to us here at Glendale College is to become a part of the process; don’t look for excuses not to be part of the process! Knowledge is Power! Remember what your math teacher told you: “There is power in numbers!”

Equity Week

This is what Campus Equity Week is all about! We have had a very successful Campus Equity Week!

On Monday, the 22nd, we had a panel discussion and open discussion session on “What is Equity?” Everyone in the room had a slightly different opinion. I would like to thank everyone who attended and those who spoke, with a special thanks to Fabiola Torres for the outstanding talk she gave.

  • On Tuesday, the 23rd, Krista Raimundo lead two Guild Meetings at the Garfield Campus.
  • On Wednesday, the 24th, Beth Kronbeck, Dr. Daphne Dionisio, and Dr. Ed Karpp gave an excellent presentation on “Understanding Your Department’s Data.”
  • On Thursday, the 25th, Robyn Fishman facilitated a presentation by Planned Parenthood.
Campus Equity Week was supposed to end on Friday the 26th, but we also have an event on the 31st. On Wednesday, October 31, 2018, we will be having a presentation by Sharon Hendricks from the California State Retirement System, entitled, “Adjunct Retirement Questions and Panel Discussion.”

Pay Raise

In the area of “Knowledge is Power!”, everyone who works here got a 3½ % pay raise that is retroactive to July 1, 2018. You should see the raise starting on your December 1, 2018, paycheck. Please look for it! Additionally, please look at your paychecks carefully to make sure that there are no errors on them. A check for your retroactive monies should be appearing in February or March.

Helping the less fortunate...

pie

One of the things that we are taught as children is to share! Now I am giving you a couple of ways to share with the less fortunate here at Glendale College. I am talking about two opportunities to help the Glendale College Food For Thought Food Pantry.

The first is the return of an Old Campus Thanksgiving Tradition! No, I am not referring to Frozen Turkey Bowling in the Verdugo Gym. I am referring to the Annual Culinary Arts Thanksgiving Pie Sale! Chef Andrew has agreed to make a limited number of his famous pies for sale, with $1.00 from each pie being donated to our food pantry. If you remember these pies or want to get one for the holiday, please place your order early as there are only so many of these luscious gourmet pies available.

The second is the return of a more recent campus tradition! Once again, this year the food pantry will be having its Thanksgiving Raffle. Prizes included so far are Turduckens and Turkeys. We are looking for donations of more prizes. Please consider buying raffle tickets as well as donating a prize or two! We will start selling tickets in the second week of November. Tickets will be $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.

With all that being said, thanks for reading this article and have a great rest of the semester!
