Practice with plagiarism - Scenario A

Original source as follows in red, excerpted from a web report authored by Anna Brown and Renee Stepler and posted by the Pew Research Center (2016).

There were a record 42.2 million immigrants living in the U.S. in 2014, making up 13.2% of the nation’s population. This represents a fourfold increase since 1960, when only 9.7 million immigrants lived in the U.S., accounting for just 5.4% of the total U.S. population.

Which of the following uses correct citation, and which plagiarizes the original source?

ESSAY OPTION #1
There were 42.2 million immigrants living in the U.S. in 2014, which was about 13% of the nation's total population. That's a record-setting number, and four times the 9.7 million immigrants who lived here in 1960.

ESSAY OPTION #2
Immigrants have certainly increased in the United States, from estimates of 9.7 million immigrants in 1960 to 42.2 million immigrants in 2014. But it's still a small percentage of the total population in our nation--only 13.2% (Brown and Stepler).
